2. LECTURES

Visual analysis is a method for understanding design by focusing on its visual elements and principles. It helps in critically evaluating images across various media, such as museums, advertisements, and social media, encouraging active interpretation rather than passive consumption.

Three Phases of Visual Analysis

1) Observation
  • Carefully examine the design’s visual elements.
  • Describe the details in your own words without prior knowledge of the design.
2) Analysis
  • Evaluate how visual elements work together to create design principles.
  • Discuss the effects on the viewer’s perception and how the composition directs the eye.
3) Interpretation
  • Combine observations and analysis with historical context and factual details.
  • Determine the design’s meaning, message, and purpose.

3. TASK 2 (VISUAL ANALYSIS & IDEATION)

Task Briefing
  • A 300-350 words for visual analysis of an artwork.
  • Sketch 3 ideas  to improve the artwork, implement design principles.
  • Describe each ideas in 30-50 words, include refferences.

Observation
The Omen poster features a portrait layout with a centered composition, creating a balanced design. It uses a duotone color scheme of red and black. At the top, a black typewriter-style font describe more about the movie. The solid black silhouette of a child serves as the focal point, with its shadow forming an inverted crosss. The dominant red background acts as negative space. At the bottom, the movie title and credits clarifies the film’s identity. The design effectively utilizes color, typography, and symbolism.

Analysis

The poster’s symmetrical composition creates a sense of stability, making the design feel more structured. The duotone color scheme, with its striking contrast between red and black, increases the intensity, while the dominant red background conveys danger and acts as negative space to the composition. The black typewriter-style font gives the text a raw, historical feel, adding to the unsettling atmosphere. The lack of a background or foreground isolates the central figure, drawing the eye directly to the child and creating a strong focal point (emphasis). The variation in text sizes establishes a clear hierarchy, subtly guiding the viewer’s focus through the design. Finally, the inverted cross integrated into the child's shadow reinforces the film’s demonic themes.

Interpretation
The Omen (2006) poster conveys a chilling sense of doom, reinforcing the film’s themes of prophecy and evil. The red background symbolizes blood and danger, while the typewriter-style text at the top reads like a prophecy. The release date, 6+6+06, directly references 666, the "Number of the Beast." At the center, the child in black appears innocent, but his shadow forming an inverted cross shows his dark nature. The inverted cross, a symbol of anti-Christian, reinforces the demonic theme. The design with no background distractions, directs full attention to the child and his doomness presence. The hierarchy of text guides the viewer’s eye from the prophecy to the symbolic numbers and the film’s title. Every element works together to foreshadow the rise of evil, making the poster as horrifying.

Sketches and Ideation

Fig. 3.2. Poster Sketch

The large inverted cross formed by the child’s shadow hints at his dark origins. A centered composition creates balance, while scale draws focus first to the cross, then the child. The minimal design heightens unease, reinforcing the eerie contrast between innocence and evil, making the poster deeply unsettling.

Fig. 3.3. Poster Sketch

The design uses symbolism and contrast. The inverted cross looms over the child, emphasizing a sinister presence. The small 'O' in "OMEN" adds unease, while the red and black palette enhances the eerie atmosphere. The centered composition ensures a striking, unsettling visual impact.

Fig. 3.4. Poster Sketch

The design presents the child's point of view, showing dark presence trapped in innocent body. The prophecy text from the cross reinforced the horror theme. The rough, almost broken figure adds unease, while the 666 reference directly ties to the Antichrist, making the message even more unsettling.

4. FEEDBACK

Week 5
The lecturer said I can proceed with the first idea (inverted cross behind the child).

Week 4
The lecturer said that my work effectively captures the visual power of The Omen poster, emphasizing the strong contrast between red and black to enhance the sinister tone. They also highlighted how the inverted cross shadow adds symbolic depth and how the centered composition reinforces an ominous structure.
