2. PROCESS WORK

FINAL PROJECT
Task Brief
This task required us to create a 720p motion graphics video, approximately 60 seconds in duration, based on a cooking tutorial from the Pasta Grannies YouTube channel. The objective was to transform the recipe into a dynamic and engaging visual narrative, ensuring that the steps are clearly communicated through motion, timing, and visual hierarchy.

The video builds upon the elements developed in Project 1: Instructable Poster, maintaining consistency in style, typography, and illustration. By adapting these static visuals into motion, the project focuses on enhancing storytelling, pacing, and clarity while preserving a cohesive and aesthetically unified design.

Work Progress
First I make a storyboard for the whole motion graphics.

After the storyboard is done. I started using the 'Project 1: Instructable Poster' graphics for this task, I later just add some motion into it. The Project 1 file is done on Adobe illustrator and is already organized per layer and sub-layer using its own naming for each element.

After organizing all elements in Adobe Illustrator, the file was transferred to Adobe After Effects. However, all sub-layers appeared merged into a single main layer, making it impossible to animate individual elements.

To resolve this, I returned to Illustrator and manually selected each object, using the “Release to Layers (Sequence)” function to separate them into individual layers. After that, each layer was renamed properly to ensure better organization and easier animation workflow in After Effects.

The layers were named by number then words, the numbers represents which scene on the story board.

In Adobe After Effects, the motion graphics were primarily created using basic animation features. These included transform properties such as position, scale, rotation, and opacity to control the movement and appearance of elements. Some animations also utilized simple expressions, such as “wiggle,” to create more dynamic and natural motion effects.

Additionally, background music titled “Cooking” by Alex Production was added to enhance the overall mood, along with several sound effects (SFX) to emphasize key moments and improve the viewing experience. The overall editing process took about 2 effective days.

4. FEEDBACK

Week 6
The lecturer advised me to proceed directly with the storyboard, as he mentioned that he would not be able to fully understand or visualize my art style at this stage. He also suggested looking for relevant references to better guide the visual direction and ensure consistency in the design. Although creating animatics would normally be the next step to plan timing and motion, he acknowledged that there may not be enough time to complete them. Therefore, I was advised to move forward with the production process while relying on the storyboard and references as the main guide.

5. REFLECTION

Observation
Throughout this project, I observed that translating a static design into motion requires a different way of thinking. While my previous work focused on composition and visual hierarchy in a still format, motion graphics required attention to timing, pacing, and transitions. I also noticed that proper layer organization in Adobe Illustrator is crucial when transferring files into Adobe After Effects, as any mistake in structure can affect the animation workflow. In addition, I realized that simple animation techniques can still produce effective results when applied carefully.

Experience
During the process, I experienced both technical and creative challenges. One of the main issues was when all sub layers merged into a single layer in After Effects, which prevented animation. This forced me to go back and fix the file using the Release to Layers Sequence function, which took more time but was necessary. I also worked under time pressure, as there was not enough time to develop animatics. Despite this, I continued using the storyboard as my main guide. Using basic transform properties and simple expressions such as wiggle helped me create motion efficiently without making the process too complex. The addition of background music and sound effects also helped me understand how audio can improve visual storytelling.

Findings
From this project, I learned that preparation and file organization are very important in motion graphics. A well structured file can make the workflow in After Effects much smoother. I also found that strong fundamentals such as timing, hierarchy, and clarity are more important than complex animation. Even with limited time and simple techniques, it is still possible to create an engaging and effective motion graphic. Lastly, I learned the importance of being adaptable, as I needed to adjust my workflow based on technical issues and time limitations while still completing the project objectives.
